FIMUCITÉ 4, our 2010 Edition comes to see the light after a project development full of complications. All of us involved in the process will remember this moment as critical but with a happy ending.
In the previous edition presentation I made reference to the global economic crisis recognizing it was certainly present, as it couldn´t be otherwise, but even so the festival was not very affected by it.
This year the crisis has dangerously menaced our festival without success. Under the current circumstances FIMUCITÉ 4 wouldn’t have been able to materialize. But the team, the staff that makes up the festival is extraordinary. We have had the great fortune of creating a family whose members are fully aware of what has been achieved in just three years, and to what extent, to this day, the FIMUCITÉ name is internationally known within the film music industry, consolidating itself as an important reference. We have invested our hearts and souls, effort, perseverance, hundreds of hours of work in these four years of management, more than 28 hours of music performed live, recorded, filmed, edited, mixed and mastered within months of work after the closing of each edition. Let us not forget the immense work of coordination and literary creation to take forward our editorial adventures and the creation of FIMUCITÉ Channel for the delight of the fans who wish to see parts of our live concerts with an incredible quality of sound and image.
Our full awareness of the work done and the huge love we feel for FIMUCITÉ, is precisely what has prevented the crisis from ruining the event. This year, the generosity and devotion of all members of the festival, from Tenerife Film Choir and its Director until the last of its representatives, enables its realization to the point of becoming, the festival itself, its main sponsor, very unusual fact in cultural management, not just in the Canary Islands, but in Spain. Of course, Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, Canary Islands Government and Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna City Councils, continue to support the festival. One of the goals of the festival has been its progressive expansion over the island. After all it is the International Film Music Festival of Tenerife, the whole island. We are happy to see the city councils of Adeje and Granadilla, the South of Tenerife, have joined the event in this Fourth Edition, putting up two wonderful children's choirs that add up to more than 40 voices from Adeje and Granadilla Schools of Music
FIMUCITÉ fourth editing revolves around the figure of one of the greatest composers of film history: John Williams.
Obviously, we wanted to focus on the Williams - Spielberg tandem, as masterfully has captured the cartoonist and artist Carlos Miranda in the brilliant poster he has created for us this year, along with the illustrations that will go with this year closing concert. Thanks, Carlos, for your generosity and friendship!
Together with Williams, in close collaboration with the prestigious label Varèse Sarabande, the festival honors the 100th anniversary of the birth of a classic, a genious of film music composition, Alex North.
This 4th edition of FIMUCITÉ assemblage of guest composers is exquisite. We will enjoy the music of one of the most brilliant French composers of the time: Bruno Coulais and his scores written for remarkable nature documentaries. Carter Burwell, regular contributor to the Coen Brothers’ films, will delight us with some of his works on La Laguna’s Leal Theatre, accompanied by the Tenerife Film Ensemble, the chamber formation of the Tenerife Film Orchestra (TFO).
Finally, this year the festival organizes a spectacular thematic concert featuring the music of a brilliant TV series followed by thousands of fans worldwide: Battlestar Galactica. Composer Bear McCreary and his band along with the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife (OST), which this year has joined the festival for the first time as guest orchestra, promise us an amazing concert that will delight the audience of FIMUCITÉ.
Alongside with the concerts in the Auditorium or the theatre and during this Edition, we are pleased to announce the participation for the first time at the festival of La Laguna’s "Guillermo González" School of Music, along with his Symphony Band. Also the Band “La Fé” from La Laguna has joined in the event, which, together with the School will delight us with an outdoor concert that will be long remembered. FIMUCITÉ has always wanted to promote the reserve of musicians of the island and through these outdoors concerts we want to bring film music closer to the audience while investing and building up the hopes of these future generations of Tenerife professional musicians. On the other hand, Santa Cruz Municipal Band of Music will play, as it brilliantly did last year, an outdoor concert with an attractive and popular program focused on the figure of master Williams.
For the festival opening we will be graced with the presence, one more year, of the Symphonic Band from the Professional Conservatory of Music which will perform the opening concert of this fourth edition in the newly restored Guimerá Theatre.
Together with these concerts, a total of six this year, main attraction of the festival, FIMUCITÉ organizes three film seasons, one in coordination with Filmoteca Canaria, centered on the work of Alex North and two others regarding John Williams and Steven Spielberg’s long-term joint work which will take place at Cajacanarias Auditorium and the Audiovisual Room of TEA (Tenerife space of the Arts), respectively. As it is tradition, the festival will include a series of interesting conferences and round tables intended for approaching film music fans and music lovers in general, to different facets of this fascinating world. The 4th edition of the event will launch, again in conjunction with Filmoteca Canaria, his third volume: "The Williams – Spielberg Connection", written as I explain in the foreword by: "A nurturing and fantastic group of specialists who will guide us by the hand in this literary travel, after which we will understand better the keys that led to the gathering of these two Titans, how Mr. Williams has faced musically each project at the moment of composing his scores, what color palette and brush strokes did the Master apply to his musical canvases, etc."
The active collaboration of University of La Laguna in the coordination of our parallel activities has enabled all those students who attend our conferences and round tables the possibility of obtaining academic certification.
As you can see, FIMUCITÉ, far from "shrinking" continues growing despite the climate that surrounds us. In rare cases passion and faith for a project can endure all the disadvantages. We hope the 4th edition of the festival will match at least the level of the third, and all the fans and lovers of this genre will quiver again this year with the magic and power displayed, every year, by the International Film Music Festival of Tenerife, FIMUCITÉ.
