Filmoteca Canaria was created by Consejería de Cultura y Deportes del Gobierno de Canarias (Culture and Sports Council) on November 3rd 1984, after the approval of a departmental order that transfers all areas of competence concerning cultural activities, promoting film creation and cultural infrastructures, to this community. In January 1992, Filmoteca Canaria becomes part of the Sociedad Publica de la Consejería de Educación, Cultura y Deportes (Education, Culture and Sports Council), called SOCAEM, and in January 2005 it is named Canarias Cultura en Red. This same year Filmoteca Canaria is assigned to Plan Canario Audiovisual.

Filmoteca Canaria, directed by María Calimano, has two main departments:

-Files and restoration area, based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

-Media and communication area, based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
